Over the past six years of painting, one lesson has stayed with me more than any other: great art begins with strong drawing, not an endless palette of colors. As I’ve grown as an artist, I’ve found myself using fewer colors and paying more attention to form, light, and structure. Sometimes, limitation creates more honesty than abundance.

For this Buddha, I worked with a deliberately limited palette, primarily scarlet lake, with touches of yellow for the highlights and burnt sienna to deepen the shadows. I chose not to use white, allowing the warmth of the pigments themselves to create the light.

I wanted this painting to feel rustic and earthbound. Not radiant in a loud or dramatic way, but quietly luminous. Like a calm presence that doesn’t ask to be noticed, yet gently changes the atmosphere of the room. To me, enlightenment isn’t something that announces itself. It is still, grounded, peaceful, and simply present.

I hope this painting brings that same sense of quiet presence into the home it finds.
