Unfolding from the Whispering Echoes series explores the quiet, lifelong struggle of learning to take up space — physically, emotionally, and relationally.

The curled figure is not fully closed, not fully open — suspended between retreat and emergence. Rendered in striking crimson against a textured teal ground, this painting captures the fragile yet powerful moment of becoming.

Description

Unfolding is part of my Whispering Echoes series — a body of work rooted in internal dialogues we rarely speak aloud.

This painting is deeply personal. It reflects my long-standing struggle with taking up space — not just physically, but emotionally and within relationships.

Taking up space can feel dangerous when you’ve spent years making yourself smaller.
Standing at the edge of the footpath instead of walking in the middle.
Folding yourself in a crowded train.
Listening endlessly, but hesitating when it’s your turn to speak.

The figure in Unfolding rests in a fetal-like posture — but look closely. It is not fully closed. The body curves inward, yet the form is expanding. This tension between contraction and emergence mirrors the slow process of healing.

While creating this piece, I felt the urge to shrink the figure further — to let it dissolve into the background. But resisting that impulse became part of the work itself. The crimson body asserts presence against the layered, textured teal space. It refuses to disappear.

This painting is not about transformation in a dramatic sense. It is about incremental courage. About baby steps. About the understanding that healing is nonlinear — some days we expand, some days we retreat.

Unfolding is a reminder that claiming space is a practice.
A quiet, ongoing act of self-recognition.
And every small opening matters.
